Edinburgh hip hop trio Young Fathers return with their highly anticipated new release “Cocoa Sugar”. The mercury award winning group have been riding high in recent years, with their second album “White men are black men too” being hailed as a modern classic by critics and fans alike. Throw in as well that they were hand picked by author Irvine Welsh to provide much of the Trainspotting 2 soundtrack and it seemed like the pressure was on the Adolescent dads to deliver. And deliver, they did. Its clear from first track “See How” that this new release is just as strong as the previous, with the declaration “some day Ill be a star, shining bright in the sky” perhaps a foresight of what could be coming the groups way very soon. The bands mix of hip hop, electronic, rock and a slight touch of garage creates an engaging album with no real weak tracks to show, if anything this album has a more commercially accessible sound than its predecessors. The darker undertones that the band have become known for are still present in tracks like “Holy Ghost” and “Tremelo”, the latter a catchy, stripped back track that is as haunting as it is beautiful. This album is a great place to start if you're new to Young Fathers, but also satisfying next chapter for more tenured fans.
